College Merthyr Tydfil student Georgia Hewitt has successfully beaten off competition from over 3,800 other students to get through to the second stage of the application process for the Sutton Trust US summer-school programme. Georgia, currently studying AS levels in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths at the college will now progress on to the final selection stage which will comprise an introductory residential in London during 7-10 April.
Georgia, who previously studied at Bishop Hedley Catholic High School, will be notified if she has been selected to receive a place on the US Programme in mid April.
Mark Richards, Head of Science at The College Merthyr Tydfil commented “Georgia is a fantastic student who made an impression on me from the start of her AS studies. She is an enthusiastic, hard working and determined student and this has been evidenced through her successful application onto the programme.”
The key aim of the Sutton Trust programme is to provide educational opportunities to all young people and not just those from better-off backgrounds.
The programme, delivered in partnership with the US-UK Fulbright Commission, is centred on a one week summer school in the US (in previous years at either Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Yale University or Harvard) with introductory events and application support in the UK before and after.
