Professional Graduate Certificate in Education/Professional Certificate in Education (Post Compulsory Education and Training)

What you will study

The first year of the programme is designed to develop a range of essential teaching skills, increase knowledge of the learning process and develop ideas relating to teaching and learning strategies. Four modules will be completed during the first year:

  • Preparing to Teach (10 credits)
  • Learning and Applying Pedagogy (10 credits)
  • Planning and Assessing Learning (20 credits)
  • Professional Practice 1* (20 credits)

* This module will include the completion of 70 hours (minimum) of teaching to include 20 hours observation of an experienced tutor.

The second year of the programme focuses on ways in which tutors can enrich the learning experience of students through such things as blended learning and innovative teaching techniques. Four modules will be completed during the second year:

  • Enhancing Learning, Teaching and Assessment (20 credits)
  • The Role of ICT in Further Education (10 credits)
  • Option (10 credits)
  • Professional Practice 2** (20 credits)

**A further 70 hours (minimum) of teaching experience will be completed in the second year.

Attendance

Attendance is required for two sessions of three hours per week (6 hours in total) either by afternoon or evening.

Currently Tuesday 1pm or 6pm and  Wednesday 1pm or 6pm.

Assessment methods

Assessment includes assignments based on lesson planning, teaching, assessment and evaluation, course design and small scale research. There are no formal examinations. Assessment of professional practice is via a series of observations and assessments and the compilation of a professional development portfolio.

 

Entry Requirements

  • Applications are invited from both graduates and non-graduates.
  •  For graduates, a 2:1 degree or above is desirable, but not essential, or a recognised equivalent, in a relevant subject area. If you are offering a vocational subject you are normally expected also to demonstrate that you have some relevant vocational experience.
  • For non-graduates, experience in a vocational area, or experience of working in a teaching or training environment is needed.
  • Mathematics and English language GCSE Grade C or above, or equivalent, are desirable, but not essential
  • Enhanced DBS check required as appropriate
  • An interview is required for this course
