A level Physical Education

QUALIFICATION

AS / A2

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course builds on your experience from key stage 4 and GCSE to enhance your knowledge and increase your understanding of the factors that affect performance and participation in physical education. The qualification looks to equip you with skills and knowledge required for higher education or the world of work.

AS/A2 UNITS

The first year is the AS course and covers topics such as:

  • Unit 1: opportunities for and the effects of leading a healthy and active lifestyle which involves a 2 hour written exam (60% AS,30% A level)
  • Unit 2: analysis and evaluation of physical activity as a performer and/or in an adopted roles which involves an internal assessment (40% AS, 20% A level)

The second year completes the A’ level with topics such as:

  • Unit 3: optimising performance and evaluating contemporary issues within sport which involves a 2 hour written exam (30% A level)
  • Unit 4: optimising practical performance in a competitive situation which involves an internal assessment (20% A level).

ASSESSMENT

60% examination and 40% practical coursework

ENTRY

5 GCSEs at grades A* to C including English language and maths; PE and/or science would also be desirable.

PROGRESSION

Many students apply to and are offered places at university to study courses such as sports studies, sports psychology, sports coaching & performance and sports management. A sports science degree can be an option with an additional science related a level. Students can also progress onto sports therapy routes with additional relevant qualifications and/or experience. A number of students go onto employment or move onto an apprenticeship programme
