A level Photography

Photography - lens and light based media

This course has been designed for anyone who has an interest in photography and wishes to develop their skills technically and creatively.

During this course you will learn how to use a Digital SLR camera and digital and analogue (traditional) processing and printing technology. Exciting and challenging assignments will be set by the tutors along with self-directed assignments. The purpose of the assignments are to develop a personal, creative approach to photography through focused investigations based around themes.

The course offers a fine-art, innovative and exciting approach to photography and will encourage experimentation with technology, media, materials, techniques and processes. Contextual understanding will support your project work through research tasks and investigations into historical and contemporary photographers/artists. Discussion and seminars will develop your critical and analytical skills which will then be applied in annotating and explaining your working practices.

You will explore:

  • Portraiture/Studio Photography/ Fashion Photography
  • Landscape Photography (working from the urban, rural and/or coastal environment)
  • Still-life Photography, working from objects or from the natural world
  • Documentary Photography, Photo Journalism
  • Experimental Imagery/Fine Art Photography
  • Traditional Darkroom Photography
  • Photographic Installation
  • Aesthetics/Contextual Studies/History of Photography

At AS level, you will mainly explore the practical and creative side of photography, whilst contextual/historical studies are introduced to support knowledge and understanding.

At A2 level, you will be furthering both your contextual/historical knowledge and your practical/creative skills. You will have the opportunity to present your work at a more professional level and complete a personal investigation.

You will study the following areas: Camera use, Photographic Composition, Image Manipulation, Experimental Imagery, Studio and Location Photography and Contextual Understanding.

  • One unit must be completed in order to gain an AS award:

Unit 1 – Creative Personal Enquiry

An extended, exploratory project/portfolio and outcome/s based on themes and subject matter which are personal and meaningful to the learner. The Enquiry must integrate critical, practical and theoretical work.

  • To gain the full award, you will study two more A2 units to complete the A level:

  • Unit 2 – Personal Investigation
Consists of two integrated constituent parts:

  • 1. A major in-depth critical, practical and theoretical investigative project/portfolio and outcome/s based on themes and subject matter that have personal significance to the learner.

    2. An extended written element of 1000 words minimum, which may contain images and texts and must clearly relate to practical and theoretical work the learner has made in part 1 of the unit,  using an appropriate working vocabulary and specialist terminology.

Unit 3 – Externally Set Assignment

  • The externally set assignment materials are to be released to learners from 1 February (in the second year of the course) and will consist of a series of visual and written stimuli, which are to be presented to the learner at the start of the preparatory study period. One of the stimuli is to be selected by the learner and used as a starting point from which to elicit a personal response. The learner will produce a practical and theoretical investigative project/portfolio and outcome/s based on the chosen stimuli
