A level Further Mathematics



COURSE DESCRIPTION Further mathematics is an AS/A level qualification which broadens and deepens the mathematics covered in AS/A level mathematics. Any students wishing to take a mathematics-rich degree (this covers a very wide range of academic areas – mathematics, engineering, sciences, computing, and finance/economics etc) will benefit enormously from taking further mathematics to at least AS level. Further mathematics introduces new topics such as matrices and complex numbers that are vital in many mathematics-rich degree courses. The course is divided into three elements: further pure mathematics, statistics and mechanics. All pupils will study all
three elements.

AS/A2 UNITS The first year is the AS course and covers:

ASSESSMENT 100% examination

Entry 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grades A* to C. GCSE maths at grade B or above.

PROGRESSION At A level, mathematics is a much sought after qualification for entry to a wide variety of full time course in higher education. There are also many areas of employment that see a mathematics A level as an important qualification, and it is often a requirement for vocational courses related to these areas. Higher education courses or careers that list A level.
