Course Description

A level design and technology offers a unique opportunity for learners to identify and solve real problems by designing and making products or systems in a wide range of contexts relating to their personal interests. Design and technology develops learners’ interdisciplinary skills and their capacity for imaginative, innovative thinking, creativity and independence.

AS/A2 Units

The first year is the AS course and covers topics such as:

  • 4.1.1 Designing and innovation (AS)
  • 4.1.2 Product analysis (AS)
  • 4.2.1 Materials and components (AS)
  • 4.2.2 Industrial and commercial practice (AS)

Assessment

20% examination and 30% project (AS)

The second year completes the A’ level with topics such as:

  • 4.1.3 Human responsibility (A2)
  • 4.1.4 Public interaction (A2)
  • 4.2.3 Processes (A2)
  • 4.2.4 Production systems and control (A2)

Assessment

20% examination and 30% project (A2)

Entry

5 GCSEs at grades A* to C including English language and maths.

Progression

This qualification provides a suitable foundation for the study of design and technology or a related area through a range of higher education courses (e.g.); progression to the next level of vocational qualifications (e.g.); or direct entry into employment. In addition, the qualification provides a coherent, satisfying and worthwhile course of study for candidates who do not progress to further study in this subject.

Bryony Foley successfully achieved a B in Design and Technology, an A in Mathematics and C's in Physics and Further Mathematics. Bryony has now progressed on to study Mechanical Engineering at Loughborough University.

BTEC Level 3 Engineering (A Level Equivalent):

This qualification is for students who may wish to follow a more practical route as an alternative to the more academic subjects. This course is aimed at preparing students to work in the engineering industry or to progress to higher education.(Refer to ‘A’ level option block)
