COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course offers a balanced combination of Applied Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
It is a hands-on course where the majority of learning and assessment is done through learner-led research,
investigation, and report writing. Teaching is geared towards vocational science, so it is highly relevant to potential employers. The AS is 66.6% coursework with 33.3 % examined and the A2 is 66.6% coursework with 33.3% assessed investigation.

AS/A2 UNITS
The first year is the AS course and covers:
- Unit 1: Chemical Analysis (Portfolio Work)
- Unit 2: Energy and the Environment (Portfolio Work)
- Unit 3: Health Science – External Exam
The second year completes the A’ level with:
Unit 4: Applied Scientific Investigation and two units chosen from:
- Applied Forensics
- Applied Biology
- Applied Energy
- Applied Scientific Communication
- Applied Working in Science
ASSESSMENT
83% Coursework and 17% Examination
ENTRY
5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grades A* to C including Science, English Language and Maths.
PROGRESSION
Students with a good grade in A level Applied Science have gone on to a wide range of university courses including;
Nursing/Midwifery, Radiography, Forensic Science and many others.
It also links in with vocational technician training in the science and healthcare sectors.
