As well as providing a wide range of courses, the college aims to provide a supportive, inclusive environment where learners of every ability, with a range of aspirations, can succeed. The care, support and guidance that is offered by the college is outlined below or, alternatively, you can download a copy of our Learner and Pastoral Support Brochure.
The college has a designated one stop ‘Learner Support’ department, situated on the ground floor. This provides a first point of contact for students to seek advice on any questions, queries, concerns they may have or any information they request. Learner Support Advisors offer key support and guidance on the following:
The disability and learning coach team offers learning support and mentoring on a one-to-one and in-class basis. The team is available to learners with dyslexia and/or disabilities in an inclusive, non-discriminatory environment.
The team may be able to assist you with resources and software that can support your learning at The College Merthyr Tydfil. Learners can be supported at all course levels in all curriculum areas. Young carers and those who are in the care of the local authority can also access support through the learning coach team.
The college provides a safe and supportive environment in which everyone is able to study to their potential.
We will challenge discrimination in all its forms and positively promote equality and diversity. Our Strategic Equality Plan and Action Plan are available via our website or from Student Support. As a college serving local people we recognise that we work better when we are representative of the whole community. If you have any questions then please contact Student Support on 01685 726006.
If you have a disability, please contact us so that we can make reasonable adjustments for you.
You are encouraged to arrange a college visit to have a look at our facilities. If you think you may need support when you arrive at the college, please let us know so that we can make arrangements to welcome you.
For new residents to Merthyr Tydfil, we have electronic welcome packs available via www.merthyrcohesion.com/welcome-to-merthyr-tydfil
We will ensure that you are provided with high quality careers advice and guidance throughout your time at the college. This will include:
Advice and guidance on progression to further and higher learning, including how to apply to university
Advice and guidance on progression into employment
There will be opportunities for all full-time learners to undertake a work experience placement.
You will have access to a confidential and supportive counselling service provided by a counsellor who is professionally trained, qualified and highly experienced.
The Counselling Service is here to help you address any personal or emotional problems that get in the way of you enjoying your experience at this College.
Seeking counselling is about making a positive choice to seek help, by talking with a professionally trained listener who has no other role in your life, and is a free and confidential service. The counsellor Anni Richardson is a highly trained BACP accredited, and experienced professional.
The service is available during term times on a Monday and Tuesday between 9 and 5.
Nursing staff from Cwm Taf Health Trust will provide a weekly, informal and completely confidential drop-in session on issues related to health and wellbeing. In addition, the college offers a Substance Misuse Service.
All learners will have access to the college's multi-faith Chaplaincy service which offers advice and information on all faiths. James Karran, our Chaplain, will be available every Wednesday afternoon to provide advice, guidance and support for students.
