An exciting and innovative school transition project has been identified as an example of good practice by Schools Challenge Cymru.
The #Wednesday project, which has been initiated by Afon Taf High school in partnership with The College Merthyr Tydfil, aims to provide opportunities for year six primary children and year seven secondary school pupils to engage in a variety of enrichment activities to assist them in their transition from primary to secondary school whilst inspiring them to want to do well in school and progress on to A levels or further education at the college.
Offering a wide range of over 20 extra-curricular sessions, including hands on science, music, drama, karate, football, basketball, dance, photography, junk sculpture, enterprise, robotics and computer coding, the project has enabled over 150 pupils the opportunity to engage in activities that they may not otherwise have had the means to do so.
Speaking at the Challenge Sharing Good Practice Event, Deputy Headteacher Emma Clarke commented, “Afon Taf serves a catchment area with significant social deprivation and we wanted to make sure that our pupils have access to the same kind of enrichment activities as pupils from more affluent areas – activities such as timber grafting. We believe such activities play a vital role in developing qualities such as self confidence, teambuilding, communication and self esteem. All of the activities are delivered jointly by The College Merthyr Tydfil and Afon Taf staff, providing an excellent transition partnership link between primary school, secondary schools and further education across Merthyr Tydfil.”
College Principal, John O’Shea stated “We have been very pleased to support the delivery of the #Wednesday programme both to help provide enrichment opportunities for youngsters across Merthyr Tydfil and also to showcase the educational opportunities that exist beyond year 11 in Merthyr Tydfil. The college has fantastic facilities and great teachers and we hope that this type of partnership working will inspire pupils to progress on to further and higher education at the college.”
