Students participating in a unique Healthcare Academy initiative have had their achievements recognised as part of the College Merthyr Tydfil’s Prize Giving Evening held on 17th June 2014. The initiative, which is run by the college’s science department in partnership with Cwm Taf University Health Board, is open to all college students who are interested in a career in healthcare and can fully commit to the programme.
The Award for ‘Student of the Year’ was presented to Luke O’Reilly, an AS level Biology student at the college. Luke, who previously attended Afon Taf High School won the award due to his outstanding achievement in biology. After receiving the award Luke said: “Biology is my favourite subject. It’s been a great year. I was very surprised to receive the award.”

Stacey Ward, a biology teacher at The College commented: “Luke is a very deserving recipient of the award. He has worked incredibly hard in biology all year and has been an enthusiastic participant in the Healthcare Academy.”
Luke was presented with his award by Mr Kamal Asaad, Medical Director for the Health Board who said: “I am delighted to attend this event and present the award to Luke. It is another positive example of effective partnership working between the NHS and the local universities and colleges working for the benefits of the wider community.”
This is the first year the award has been presented and is the result of a successful alliance with the clinical education team at the Health Board and The College Merthyr Tydfil to develop and run a Healthcare Academy throughout the 2013/14 academic year.
The programme has been designed by teachers and clinicians to provide support for learners in the college who have an interest in working within the NHS. The main goals of the programme are:
