Foundation Degree Photography

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is offered full time spanning two academic years. Learners can choose to complete a third year at University of South Wales, Atrium campus, in order to achieve a full honours degree. Access to the third year depends on successful completion of the FD.

The course will provide a wide range of photographic training through challenging and stimulating assignments, along with a variety of field trips to support your studies. Digital photography, traditional silver-based photography and extensive studio and location work are key elements of the course with a strong emphasis on practice. Assignments are varied and interesting, covering disciplines such as photojournalism, documentary photography, fashion photography, commercial photography, fine art approaches and alternative photographic styles. A sound knowledge of the history of photography and awareness of contemporary developments will support and underpin your photographic practice and encourage you to think critically, about photography and its impact on our society and culture

 

YEAR 1

Photographic modules will embrace an exciting and broad spectrum of photographic practice including:

 

  • Photography and The Real explores camera skills and composition
  • Photography and Illusion explores studio lighting and photo-fiction type images
  • Photography as Narrative explores film theory and video editing and practice
  • Creative Industries Practical Project sees you undertaking work experience assignments
  • Critical Practices: Histories explores the contextual background to your photographic practice
  • Study Skills teaches you the academic skills to apply critical thinking to your practice

YEAR 2

Photographic modules will embrace an exciting and broad spectrum of photographic practice including:

 

  • Consolidated Photographic Practice sees you developing an in-depth visual and critical study into subject matter of your choosing
  • Creative industries Work Placement sees you undertaking work experience assignments
  • Critical Practices: Paradigms explores contemporary photographic thinking
  • Career Development teaches you the professional marketing, promotion and business skills needed as a photographer

 

All learning gives you a total of 240 university credits.
 

 

 

 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR NON-MATURE LEARNERS

  1. Two A-Levels at C/C or above
  2. BTEC equivalent: Merit/Pass/Pass

 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR MATURE LEARNERS

  1. If you can show portfolio evidence of an interest in photography or other relevant skills or prior learning, you will not require formal qualifications but will be invited to attend an interview.


ADDITIONAL CRITERIA

All applications will be considered on an individual basis and will include attending an Interview and showing portfolio evidence.
