College Merthyr Tydfil Ladies Team excel at Welsh Colleges Football Festival!

The rain failed to dampen the spirit of the College Merthyr Tydfil’s ladies football team who have successfully beat off competition from 12 other colleges to win the 2014 Welsh College’s football tournament. The seven a side tournament was held in Merthyr Tydfil Football Club on Wednesday 8th October - one of the wettest days of the autumn term to date. Organised by College Merthyr Tydfil Sports staff and Merthyr Tydfil Football Club, the tournament comprised over 100 players who all displayed a fantastic level of teamwork and enthusiasm. The College Merthyr Tydfil Ladies Football Team coach, Craig James, commented “The girls thoroughly enjoyed the competition and deserved to win. They were excellent throughout the tournament beating teams from Cymoedd, Neath, Gower, Newtown, Sir Gar and Pembroke. They went on to the final facing Gower College where they won 3-0”.

Not only did the day enable the girls to claim their victory trophy, but it also allowed Welsh Colleges’ staff to identify players to be selected to attend their upcoming National Colleges trial in November.

Andrew Stokes, GCS Men’s Football Academy Coach praised the contribution of everyone involved for making the day such a success, commenting, “I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who attended the Welsh Colleges Festival and the fantastic contribution and attitude shown by all players and staff in what was a difficult day at times due to the weather. A Huge thanks go to Craig James, The College Merthyr Tydfil and Merthyr Tydfil Football Club who organised and run the festival fantastically well. To have over a 100+ players participating was an excellent turn out. Well done to all teams that made it a fun and competitive environment and congratulations to The College Merthyr Tydfil who were the overall winners on the day”.

The girls will now go on to play in the Welsh college’s league where they will have fixtures most Wednesday afternoons.
